"Different
Brush Beats, Phil, I went through your book and thought it was
great! I wish I could've had that as a kid; it would have made me understand
brush playing much quicker. It's great that each page relates to a song on
CD. It really helps to see how it relates to a certain feel and tempo. I also
really like what the Preface and Message to Parents and Music Teachers
says." ~Shawn Fichter is one of Nashvilles top drummers. Former Drummer
with Barbara Mandrell and Trisha Yearwood, toured and performed on numerous
TV shows. Guest performers that joined Trisha on television while Shawn was
drumming include Don Henley, Garth Brooks, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Kim
Richey. Shawn has also been called upon to sub with other artists including
country/pop artist Martina McBride and blues artist Lee Roy Parnell. In
recent years, Shawn has worked his way into the Nashville studio scene,
getting calls not only for country sessions but also for many rock, pop, and
contemporary Christian recordings. Shawn is currently enjoying touring with
Peter Frampton. "Phil Zampino's "Different Brush Beats" is an intelligent text regarding the art of brush playing. A seemingly lost art of drumming, the younger generation of players needs this information presented to them in a clear and easily understandable method. Phil Zampino has done just that. Clearly thought out and illustrated very well, I've learned a few new tricks myself! Phil and the staff at Zampino's drum shop had a profound effect on my early years as a musician. Without their experience and the tools they gave me, I would not be where I am in my career. I'm proud and blessed to have been educated in part by Phil and I'm glad he has committed so much of his life to sharing that knowledge. Congrats Phil! And I highly recommend this book." Different Brush Beats, "Do
you know where your brushes are? Playing on the drum set has become so stick
driven: the use of brushes is quickly becoming a lost art. For the next
generation of drum set players, and for those who are in need of a refresher,
Different Brush Beats is a must. The book contains clear directions on basic
brush technique and 14 brush beats. Each brush beat is matched to a song from
a CD (purchased separately); ideal for learning when a particular brush beat
should be used. Especially helpful for students, the hands position for each
brush beat is explained by visualizing the snare drum as a clock face: the
left hand moves clockwise at 11:00 and the right hand moves counter-clockwise
at 1:00. A final handy feature is a listing of terms - so there's no
confusion with terms like "snap, slap, hot spots, or fat sound."
After using this book, you'll never misplace your brushes again!" ~Doug Wurst - Modern Drummer Magazine~ August 2005, Issue,

Rating and Review Below! "Different Brush
Beats, by Phil Zampino, approaches the concept of brush playing
from two new angles: from a "contemporary" application and through
the use, and reference to existing popular songs. The explanation of
terminology, as well as the encouragement for students to use the brushes
provides some hope for the next generation in terms of recapturing this important
facet of drumming." ~Robert Breithaupt~ mailto:BBreit@aol.com-

University Department Chair - Jazz Studies/Music Industry~ "Man, I was thinking the other day, drum set brush playing is becoming a lost art form. You have to really search out the classic guys to hear it (Roy Haynes, Ed Thigpen, Louis Bellson) and, are such an essential technique to add to the kit. Phil has gathered some great ways to dive into this expressive drum set format. With clear concise descriptions, beginning, as well as novice players, will be able to use their brush technique in many suitable playing environments-Jazz, Latin, Rock, and Country. Get down to the drum shop, pick up some brushes, and start "sheddin" with the help of Different Brush Beats." ~Johnny Fedevich
