Phil Zampino, Sr. began playing the drums in
1952.
Phil Zampino began his teaching career in 1961
with the "Buckeye School of Music".
Phil knew immediately in 1961 that he would
continue having a career in teaching and that he would open a music
store some day. Phil worked in sales, marketing and advertising for
several music stores.
Phil was a percussion section leader in his high school
band his sophomore, junior and senior years.
Phil received the best
section leader award two years in a row.
In 1963-64, he began
teaching from his home and traveled to homes to give students lessons.
In 1964, Phil began teaching several small Drum
Corps.
Phil received outstanding band member of the
year.
In his School of Music Class, he was only one of
three who graduated from the Armed Forces School of Music. His GPA was
3.75.
He was in the 1st Army Headquarters
Band stationed near Washington, DC for 3 years.
Phil was the only drummer selected from the
Headquarters Band to perform with a USO show band, which did extensive
traveling
during the Vietnam War.
In 1968, Phil was offered the drumming spot
with "James Brown". He was also offered playing gigs in New York and Las
Vegas.
Phil chose to teach,
operate his business, and perform with many different rock groups and
jazz bands. He continued to follow his
dream of opening a music store specializing in Percussion.
In August of 1968, Phil founded Zampino's Drum
Shop/School of Music, PAZ Publishing, PAZ Percussion and Drummer's
Distribution
and operated all of these businesses from
his home. He also taught many drum corps during this time period.
Phil also chose to work for the Post Office
starting in the fall of 1968.
In 1970, he began training students to become
student teachers.
In 1971, he began a student group called the
"Percussionists".
In 1972, Phil injured his back working at the
post office.
In 1973, Phil began other home business
percussion outlets to percussion private teachers in the
Massillon/Canton area.
Soon afterwards he expanded throughout the USA.
In 1974-75, Phil began a mail-order business for
percussion. His Student "Percussionists" won 1st place in a
music competition in the
State of Ohio.
The mail-order business grew rapidly. Additions
to his home were necessary for stocking merchandise.
The business grew to be the 6th
largest volume store in sales across the USA with several major
manufacturers.
In 1979-80, the business was moved to its
current location on Main Street in North Canton.
In 1981, Phil opened another affiliate store
"Columbus Percussion Center" in Columbus, Ohio.
In 1982, Phil opened another affiliate store in
Peoria, Illinois.
In 1982, Phil hired Scott Grewell to become the
store manager, to teach at the store and to take over his drumming spot
with the Sam
Coletti Orchestra. Scott had already been
selling for Zampino's for nearly 6 years.
In 1983, Phil opened another affiliate store in
Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1984, Phil opened another affiliate store in
Dayton, Ohio.
In 1990, Phil began selling the affiliate
stores.
In 1992-93, it is believed Phil had his first
heart attack.
Ongoing heart treatment began.
In 1996, Phil was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer.
Phil sold the inventory to Scott Grewell when
he learned that he might have only one or two years to live. The
inventory was sold with the intent that education of students would
remain the top priority.
The name of the
business and the building is still owned by Phil Zampino.
During Chemotherapy in 1996, Phil began compiling
his previous 40 years of percussion writings. He put them into 26 books
and published those books.
In 2002, Phil's cardiologist confirmed that
Phil had a heart attack on January 3rd and on June 1st.
However, the new heart medication that Phil is taking seems to be
helping his cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia.
In May 2002, Phil's oncologist stated, "I believe
you are cured of Cancer." However Phil's Cancer returned again in June
2003 and he again began Chemotherapy.
In 2004, two of Phil's books, "Theory Scales &
Chords for the Percussion Student" and "Different Brush Beats" was
recommended and
recognized by the
worldwide-distributed magazine, "Modern Drummer."
2004, Phil started a Cancer Support Group called,
C-PAG [Cancer Patients Advocacy Group].
2005, Phil continues to be treated for Cancer,
Heart Problems and his 1972 Back Injury.
